For there is no question of the knowledge itself being so disseminated; like much expert knowledge in our own society, it is far too complex and difficult for that. Thus the examined life, which Socrates thought best for all human beings, is now led only by mature adults with extensive scientific and dialectical training.

Ethics was itself seen as a highly integrated set of topics, including categories of value and a theory of development (Long and Sedley, 1987, s. 56). Not everyone is able to benefit, however, from all these types of education; there are some at each stage whose desires are too strong for education to break.
