From their collective military experience, Americans in general and frontiersmen in particular had come to believe the citizens of the republic were capable of defending themselves without assistance from the Federal government. John Sevier, hero of Kings Mountain in 1780, and Daniel Morgan, victor at The Cowpens in 1781, were American fountainheads of this faith, a creed borne out by Andrew Jackson at Horseshoe Bend and New Orleans and by Sam Houston at San Jacinto. " Their followers were frontiersmen and democrats, accustomed to fight- Page 4 ing their own battles, whether against Indians, the British, or the Mexicans, and to maintaining a fierce independence from the central government at Washington.

With a combined force of some one hundred Mexicans and three hundred Indians, Cordova launched his campaign on 7 August 1838 from an island in the Angelina River. 9 Caldwell returned his company to Seguin, where it disbanded on 15 May.
