This recommendation is the least satisfactory that West made. Marxists in America and Europe, and particularly white ones, have shown little ability to understand racism. Their emphasis is on social class and social class domination. Black people have been dominated in America primarily by white men. This is gender, not class domination. And since white men dominated black people in a racist manner, from their gender position, that makes the domination gender-racist. Marxists and Marxist analysis would not be able to relate to these situations easily.

It will appear, I think, that the qualities of fortitude, irony, and a relative absence of self-pity are the most important influences in the lives of Negroes, and that these qualities are the secret strength of that part of us which is one with a universal nature. 14 Davis was, as his comments show, raising the question for black intellectuals generally and Black literati, artists, and literary critics in particular whether Black literature, poetry, and art were ingrown and only Black or were also to have a universal dimension and appeal.
